27 July, 2023

In a rapidly evolving global landscape, Mauritius has emerged as a shining beacon for businesses, earning its place among the 20 best countries to conduct business in Africa and across the globe. According to the latest World Bank Ease of Doing Business Report 2020, released on 24th October 2019, Mauritius achieved an impressive feat, climbing seven spots to secure the 13th position out of 190 countries. What’s more, the country proudly retains its status as the top-ranking destination for business in Africa.

Over the past few years, Mauritius has undertaken a consistent and determined effort to transform its business environment, and the results are evident. Its remarkable ascent in the Ease of Doing Business rankings, from 49th in 2016 to 13th in 2019, reflects a steadfast commitment to becoming a leader in business facilitation in Africa and one of the most business-friendly nations worldwide. In this endeavor, Mauritius is standing shoulder to shoulder with renowned jurisdictions like New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

The World Bank’s assessment of ease of doing business takes various indicators into account, and Mauritius has shown commendable progress in critical areas such as construction permits and registration of properties.

One significant factor contributing to the improvement in dealing with construction permits is the streamlining of procedures through the automation of licensing permits. These major reforms have revolutionized the process, making it much more efficient for businesses. The introduction of the National Electronic Licensing System has enabled the electronic submission of various business licenses, including Building and Land Use Permits and Occupation Certificates. This shift to digital platforms has accelerated the pace of approvals and significantly reduced bureaucratic hurdles.

To enhance transparency and accessibility of information, Mauritius has implemented the Mauritius e-Registry System. This system now provides public access to a comprehensive national register of immovable properties and statistics on land dispute resolutions.

Additionally, a mechanism for filing complaints has been put in place, further bolstering transparency and accountability of local authorities. Mauritius’ remarkable ascent in the Ease of Doing Business rankings and its dedication to continuous improvement demonstrate its unwavering commitment to creating a conducive environment for businesses to thrive. As the country sets its sights on even greater heights, it aims to serve as a shining example for other nations seeking to foster a vibrant and welcoming business ecosystem. With its progressive policies, streamlined processes, and commitment to innovation, Mauritius is undoubtedly poised to maintain its status as a premier business destination in Africa and the world.
